Pharmaceutical drug delivery pioneer Nanomerics Ltd. recently opened its London headquarters to the latest cohort of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC) Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences initiative. Marking its fifth consecutive year as a founding industry partner, Nanomerics hosted the landmark site visit to support and advance ethnic diversity and inclusion across the STEM sector.
Inside real-world pharmaceutical development
This immersive event gave an aspiring group of early-career scholars a comprehensive look into real-world pharmaceutical development. Attendees toured Nanomerics’ state-of-the-art laboratories, observed live technical demonstrations, and engaged in deep-dive discussions with the scientific team. Participants were able to see ongoing research first hand and learn how the medicines featuring Nanomerics’ award-winning Molecular Envelope Technology (MET) are advanced from early preclinical through to clinical development. MET is a clinical-stage proprietary drug delivery platform driving pharmaceutical innovation in ophthalmological and neurological treatments, as well as gene therapies.
Q&A with the founders
A standout feature of the day was an interactive Q&A session with Nanomerics’ founders, Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu (CSO) and Professor Andreas Schätzlein (CEO), who shared their journey of building a science-driven enterprise. This segment granted participants direct access to executive leadership, offering invaluable first-hand insights into the realities of pharmaceutical R&D and commercialisation.
What participants said
Post-visit feedback confirmed the day’s significant impact: attendees reported that the experience broadened their perspectives on aspects of the pharmaceutical industry. Overall, members of the cohort expressed a strong interest in working at Nanomerics, including via the company’s dedicated internship pathway, which places young talent directly onto active research projects.
Reflecting on the day, participants noted:
“The analytical lab tour was incredibly informative - it was fascinating to see the real‑world impact of Nanomerics’ technologies.”
“The session with the leadership was inspiring and very enlightening. It was great being able to meet the CEO and CSO of the company and listen to their experiences.”
By maintaining this strong corporate partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry, Nanomerics continues its contribution to dismantling barriers for minoritised groups - equipping the next generation of scientific leaders with the network, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in the pharmaceutical sector.
